At one point in time Jamaica was once a British colony. British Colony from 1707 until 1962, when it became independent. Jamaica became a Crown colony in 1866. The sport of Cricket started in England, and the English absolutely love and played the sport and entertainment.
The sport of cricket has a known history beginning in the late 16th century. Having originated in southeast England, it became the country’s national sport in the 18th century and has developed globally in the 19th and 20th centuries.
Over the years, Jamaica has not only played in, but won several championships, dating all the way back to 1968. We’ve sent numerous players such as, Courtney Walsh, Derrick Page, and famous umpire Douglas Sang Hue.
The people of Jamaica are extremely talented and competitive. The sport of cricket is one of the ways through which we express this competitiveness. It is in our “bones”, and has been for a very long time. So in short, its been a bit of a past time for a few hundred years!
